Ways to reach STEP
Coach calls
How is my coach assigned?
STEP assigns a suitable coach for your plan and goals. We aim for continuity where possible, but cannot guarantee the same coach for every call.
How many coach calls do the plans include?
Everyday English: At least 4 coach calls a month. Professional Communication: At least 6 coach calls a month. IELTS Speaking: 31 coach calls, usually about four months.
Can I book more calls?
Additional calls are available at no extra cost, subject to coach-slot availability.
Learning path and personalised lessons
How are my lessons chosen?
STEP selects relevant lessons from a library of 800+ lessons based on your level, goals and progress.
Is the learning path the same for everyone?
No. Your coach calls and selected lessons respond to your starting point, goals, practice and pace.
Everyday English, Professional Communication and IELTS Speaking
How do the plans differ?
Everyday English supports everyday communication, Professional Communication focuses on communication at work, and IELTS Speaking focuses only on the speaking part of IELTS.
How long do the plans run?
Everyday English and Professional Communication are open-ended monthly subscriptions. IELTS Speaking covers 31 coach-call topics with 64 video webisodes and 11 assignments, usually completed in about four months; practice stays available while the subscription is active.
Pricing, renewal and cancellation
How does renewal work?
Your plan renews monthly until you cancel. Check the pricing page for current plan prices.
When does cancellation take effect?
You can cancel at any time. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.
App and web access
Can I use STEP on different devices?
Yes. You can use self-paced learning and practice on the STEP app and web.
Are all lessons completed in order?
No. Relevant lessons are selected for you, so you do not need to complete all 800+ lessons.
Assessments and certification
Is certification included with a coaching subscription?
No. Certification is a separate STEP product and is not included in Everyday English, Professional Communication or IELTS Speaking subscriptions.
Does STEP offer English assessments?
Yes. STEP Plus assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing and reports performance against CEFR levels.
For individual learners
Is there a free version?
Yes. Core access to the STEP platform — assessment, lessons, and AI speaking practice — is free to start. You upgrade only if you want a coach or a structured programme.
How does the 7-day trial work?
You pay the trial amount (₹199 / ₹299 / ₹499 depending on plan) and get full access for 7 days. On day 7 your monthly subscription begins automatically — unless you cancel in the app or by replying to our day-5 reminder email.
Will I be charged automatically after week 1?
Yes, unless you cancel during the trial. We email a reminder on day 5 so the renewal is never a surprise, and you can cancel in the app or by replying to that email.
Which payment methods are supported?
Secure checkout is handled by Paytm — cards, UPI, net-banking, and supported wallets. A GST invoice is available upon request.
How do coach calls and live classes work?
Individuals book 1-on-1 coach calls; teams and institutional cohorts get live group sessions. Your coach works from your assessment profile, so sessions target your specific gaps rather than a generic syllabus. Read the relevant methodology →
Coupons and refunds?
Enter a coupon code at checkout. For refunds: the introductory-week fee is not refundable, and you can request a refund of your first monthly charge within 14 days of it, as long as you have taken no more than two coach calls that month. Refunds are per billing period, not pro-rata. WhatsApp or email us from your registered number and the team picks it up between 10am and 7:30pm IST. Full terms are on the terms and conditions page.
Something isn’t working in the app.
Message us on WhatsApp with your registered number, your device, and a screenshot if you have one. Most issues are resolved same day during support hours.
Corporate and institutional programmes
What can an organisation programme include?
STEP can combine assessment, CEFR benchmarking, virtual instructor-led training (VILT), classroom training, self-paced learning, coaching and progress reporting as appropriate for the organisation and its learners.
Are programmes the same for every organisation?
No. STEP works with the organisation to choose the delivery mix that fits its learners, goals and context.
For teams & enterprises
What does STEP actually do for a company?
We are a professional communication readiness partner. We assess how your people communicate in English at work — written, spoken, and client-facing — benchmark it against CEFR and sector norms, run programmes to close the gaps, and give you outcome data you can take to your own leadership. It covers hiring screening, new-hire induction, and professional development for existing teams.
How does an engagement work?
Assessment first, always. We baseline the group against CEFR, agree the target outcomes with your L&D or TA team, then run a structured programme — blended self-paced content, live instructor-led sessions, and coaching where it adds value — over a defined period. You get progress reporting through the programme and a full outcome report at the end. Read the relevant methodology →
What exactly do you assess, and is it CEFR-aligned?
Yes. Every assessment maps to the CEFR scale (A1–C1) and grades fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, with audio evidence retained. Because we run 200,000+ assessments a year, scores are benchmarked against real Indian professional norms by sector and role — not just a raw band. Read the relevant methodology →
What reporting do we get?
A manager-level outcome report: pre- and post-programme CEFR movement, engagement and completion, and — where the data is shareable — placement or progression deltas. It is designed to justify the spend internally, not just to confirm attendance. Read the relevant methodology →
How is our data handled?
Assessment and learner data is used to deliver and report on your programme. Speaking assessments include an audio recording of the response, which is retained for three years and then deleted. We can walk your security and procurement teams through data handling, access controls and retention during evaluation.
How much does it cost, and how do we buy?
Enterprise and institutional pricing depends on scope — headcount, delivery mode, duration, and reporting depth — so we quote per engagement rather than publish a rate card. Book a demo and we’ll scope it with you; we can also run a short diagnostic on a sample of your team first. A GST-compliant invoice is issued for every engagement.
Can we try before we commit?
Yes. We can send a 15-minute diagnostic to 5–10 of your people before the first real conversation, so you see where your team actually stands — a B1 average, say, and what a focused programme changes — before you decide anything.
For colleges & institutions
What does STEP do for a placement cell?
We make your students demonstrably interview-ready and give you the data to prove it. Students are assessed against CEFR, trained on workplace and interview communication, and re-assessed — and your placement cell gets a readiness score per batch plus a documented outcome report.
How does it run for a batch?
Baseline assessment for the cohort, a structured readiness programme (self-paced plus instructor-led), and a final re-assessment. Attendance, progress, and pre-placement readiness are tracked throughout and delivered to the placement cell.
What do our students walk away with?
A CEFR profile they carry into the job market, and practical communication skills for interviews and the workplace. Students placed at employers who also use STEP arrive with a benchmark those employers already recognise.
How do students access the platform?
Through the institutional programme — core platform access (assessment, lessons, and AI practice) is included. Students can continue on the free platform afterwards on their own.
About STEP
Who runs STEP?
STEP is built and run inside The Hindu Group, which has published in English in India since 1878. We have taught and assessed professional and academic English since 2016.
What makes STEP different from an app or a generic training vendor?
Three things together: CEFR-aligned assessment at real scale (200,000+ a year) that benchmarks you against actual Indian workplace norms; content built around workplace scenarios rather than grammar drills; and a human coach plus AI practice, not one or the other. We measure outcomes and report them — we don’t just deliver sessions.
Is STEP only for English “beginners”?
No. We work across CEFR A1–C1 — from building basic workplace confidence to sharpening a senior professional’s client communication and presentation. The assessment tells us where to start.
